Welcome to the FOCD
"No Picture, No Instructions"
Challenge!

You have arrived at the pages where we finally get to see all of the different interpretations of this unique and creative project. All of the dolls that you are about to see are FOCD member's interpretations of a set of pattern pieces that came with NO pictures or instructions to guide them along.

How did it all start?

Maybe it was the post-holiday doldrums, perhaps it was the low-light blues, but someone on the list had a thought..….what if we all took a pattern, not knowing what it was supposed to look like, and created our own interpretation of it? Other members responded favorably to the idea, and before we knew it, the ball was rolling. Sally Isbell offered her services as coordinator of the project and put out a call to the designing members of FOCD, with a request for a pattern that could be used. From a generous array of offers, a pattern was selected and the challenge was on.

The response was overwhelming, to say the least. Our pattern went online and the challenge was announced to the FOCD, as well as to other online groups, with the invitation to join us in the adventure. Several months of creative interpretation followed, with over 60 dollmakers sending us wonderful pictures of their version of the NP/NI doll. We know for a fact that many more versions of the doll were made, and even if you didn't participate in the final challenge, please consider sending us a picture so that we may all be inspired.

The picture at the top of this page is the original, prototype version of the doll called "Andromeda", designed and created by FOCD member Anne-Marie Brombal. Take a look at the original and you'll be amazed at how the other participants interpreted the pattern, and how creatively different each version is. "Andromeda" is part of the first prize package, and the winner will receive a version of her, in their choice of colors.

Many other prizes have been generously donated and will go into the prize packages. Please join me in thanking those who provided the lovely assortment of gifts that I will try to part with and put into the prize boxes. Our sponsors include many local Dallas groups and businesses, as well as private individuals and members of FOCD:
