When I was a little girl, I remember my Grama Baumann with these wonderful little books full of everything from crochet and knitting - to foods - to plants.....they were called "Workbaskets". When my grama passed away, I was the "lucky" one chosen to receive her collection of these wonderful little book that range from 1953 to 1973. Half of them, my grama had even bound and covered with gingham cloth. They are a treasure to me and I would like to share a few things from the December 1955 issue:

BELLS (Knitted)

"Make these from odds and ends of thread or yarn. These could be used to decorate a package, tie on a baby's bed, etc. Use size knitting needles to correspond to size of yarn or thread used. Any of the new yarns combined with metalic thread would make a colorful set of bells. The model was made of Pompedour Yarn and size 3 knitting needles. Abreviations: Sts (stitches); k (knit); sl (slip) Cast on 30 stitiches. K every row (always slipping the first st of each row) until 19 ribs or ridges are made. Cut yarn leaving about 12 inches of length. Thread this through a large tapestry and yarn needle and draw through the 30 sts removing each from knitting needle, pull thread tight, draw the sts together. Now sew up the 2 sides to form a tube. Turn cuff up 1/2 inch. Make 3 bells. Sew a small jingle bell into each of 3 ribbons in color matching yarn, one 10 inch, one 11 inch and one 12 inch length--preferably satin on both sides. Pull each ribbon through center of a knitted bell and fasten securely. Tie all three securely in one knot and clip ends at an angle."
